Thinking about buying a license plate frame to show your undying pride for the Badgers reaching the Final Four? Frames are common, and dealers often include them as advertising for themselves on new and used cars. But your frame may be illegal in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Court of Appeals has held that a police officer can lawfully pull over a car that has its license plate partially obscured by a frame. This is true even if the officer has other motives for the traffic stop. State v. Collins, (Wis. Ct. App. 2010). Check your frames for any obstruction of the pertinent information on your plate, or better yet, remove them all together.
